What prematurely ages our skin?
Besides sun, other main culprits are: ?
Sugar triggers a process called glycosylation, which causes collagen to cross-link, with the result that the skin becomes stiff, inflexible and discoloured, Often, cross-linked wrinkles are caused by glycosylation.
Stress, increases cortisol, which is essential to balance us when under stress. But when it is excessive it is called the ‘death hormone’ as it breaks down tissue, increases body fat and thins the skin.
Caffeine – coffee is a strong pro-oxidant which greatly increases oxidation within the cells. Simply put, this is ageing. It is also a diuretic, which dehydrates the skin. ‘ Fat free diets! We do need good oils. Polyphones are abundant in olive oil. This super antioxidant, anti inflammatory oil has essential fatty acids present to nourish he skin and provide anti inflammatory activity. Olive oil contains hydroxytyrosol which slows the ageing process in the skin stabilising the cell plasma membrane. There are other causes such as genetics, poor nutrition, sun damage, smoking, excess sugar and stress.
Dehydration also contributes to accelerated skin ageing. Drinking water, at least 2 litres a day is recommended.
